Waratah, a 500 foot-cargo-passenger ship, vanished off the coast of South Africa in July 1909. All 211 persons on-board were apparently killed, but no bodies, wreckage or any other evidence was ever discovered. Operated by Blue Anchor Line, Waratah was on a run between England and Australia by way of the Cape of Good Hope. She was not fitted with wireless, which wasn’t unusual for the time.
