Here’s a story on the suicide rate among Titanic survivors. It seems that 1 in 89 of the people who survived the sinking ended up killing themselves. A total of eight survivors committed suicide, one as late as 1989.
If a disaster similar to Titanic were to occur today, the survivors would be undoubtedly be surrounded by grief counselors knowledgeable about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and its treatment. In 1912, however, the general view was that one should keep a stiff upper lip and move forward. Sadly, however, many survivors felt the burden was simply too great to bear.
